Essay Topic

For this assessment the topic I have chosen to explore is -

"What is communication? Do whales communicate? Do birds? Do atoms? Does DNA communicate? What would you suggest as the limits to communication? When does a failure of human communication occur?"

Week 5 questions!

What Social Media do you use regularly?

The Social Media that I regularly use is Facebook, as I connect with a lot of family and friends overseas and to me it is the easiest way to connect. I also use Instagram, simply because I love photography. Its also a good way for me to keep up with what my friends and family from overseas are doing and how they are changing over time. Out of everything, these are the two main sources of Social Media that I use.

What do you get out of Social Media? Is it a waste of time? Is it a good way to keep in touch?

As I was saying above, I mainly use Social Media to keep in touch with people overseas and also people from high-school etc. Though I do use it almost every day, its not so much a waste of time, rather a distraction or a tool for procrastination.

How many of your online friends would you see in a week? A month? All year?

Seeing as I mainly talk to people overseas online I don't see them very often at all. I still have all my school friends on things like Facebook and Instagram - so I see them occasionally but not all the time.

Do you have any off-line friends that you don't connect with online?

I have a few friends that are anti-internet, so there are a few that I occasionally catch up with and connect with via other sources.

Have you bought anything on the net? On social Media? What is the difference?

Yes I have bought things on the net, not so much Social Media. I have heard of different products on Social Media's and then bought them on the net. Doing shopping online is so much more convenient for me. Between uni and family etc, I don't usually have enough time to go out to the shops to get what I need. So it's so much easier just hop on the net and order it.

A time line of the World Wide Web!!!

History of the world wide web!

Just the casual week 3 task..

Me and communication technologies..

    * How long have you been using these communication technologies?

Personally i have been using communication technology since I was fairly young. Being only 18, I supposed when I was younger I was more inclined to be around it. I think I had my first mobile phone when i was 10 or 11 years old. With having working parents and having to catch the bus home by myself they wanted a way to be able to contact me other than the house phone or getting the neighbors to check up on me. And because my dad's job was an office job and had a lot to do with the computer he would always bring his work laptop home. Eventually both myself and my little sister would start playing games etc. on it, until it became the 'norm' to have MySpace or AIM.

    * What influenced you to start using these particular technologies?  How did you find out about them?

As mentioned in my previous statement, one of the main influences was my dad and wanting to be 'cool like him'. As for the mobile phone it was mostly influenced by both of my parents wanting to have ways to communicate with me, but one other great influence was family friends. Having spent most of my childhood around older kids than myself, I thought that it was the cool thing to do and have at the time. Because the older kids were always on their mobile phones talking to their friends all the time I thought that's what it took to be cool.

    * Is privacy an issue for you when using new technologies?  What do you think of companies like Facebook and Google who collect information about their users?   (How do you deal with issues around privacy?)

For me personally, I don't have a privacy issue for when I use new technologies. I am very cautious when I use these technologies so that's why I don't think its such an issue. I don't mind the companies like Facebook and Google, because I don't give all of the information it asks for. I give the amount of information I feel comfortable with.

    * Do you have friends whom you know only from the internet and have never met in person?   Is this different to people that you know in person?  Describe the difference.

I personally don't have close friends whom I only know from the internet and haven't met in person but my mum does. Over time they have just gotten to know one another and now hes one of the closest family friends we have. I don't really see there being a difference because your still talking to them like you would any other person, just over the internet or webcam.

a little look into the life of katelin...

Hey hey hey!

My name is Katelin Norris and this is my first year and semester at Griffith University. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Arts and just recently decided to major in Sociology. I am doing New Communication Technologies as an elective, and I am hoping that it'll just be a cool, interesting subject to gain more knowledge about! I'm fresh out of high school, well 6 months fresh and 18 years old. I have a weird kinda personality. I can be very shy and quiet but then I can be loud and obnoxious. Most of you will probably see my loud and obnoxious side because something that I have already learned from uni is that people WONT judge you. Its so good!!! This is my first blog so I'm at a loss of words as to what to write. As I said previously, I am a uni student so this will be used for academic purposes. I am still trying to figure out how to do this thing!!! Outside of all that kinda boring academic stuff, I love the beach and I love the snow. I grew up in the US as well as Australia when I was an itty bitty, but was born in Canada. Now I am here. I have all 3 citizenship and passports. I can be a tomboy but I can also be a real girly girl. Anyway that is me and be ready for some new and interesting posts!!
This video is a bit of a snip-it of how advanced technology will work. I chose this video because it does give a good laugh, but it also shows the potential of what technology could be in the future years to come. With the way technology is continuously advancing, who knows, this could be the 'norm' in just a few years.
